About Us

Available records suggest that Tytherington's WI was first formed on 1st September 1920.

Meetings were suspended on 8th February 1940 for the duration of World War II and then resumed on 20th April 1946. Meetings have been held every month since then.

Tytherington WI celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2010 with an evening get-together in the Village Hall.

Today WI members continue to support village activities such as the May Day Fayre and the Gymkhana, as well as enjoying two or three coach trips each year to various attractions.

Latest Meeting

This was our third and final afternoon meeting for this year, and took place in the Village Hall. Future meetings in 2017 will take place in the evenings, commencing at 7.30 pm. Valerie Vizard, President, welcomed everyone and we then joined together in singing Jerusalem.

The Mumbleys Hill Group of WIs Meeting had taken place in Armstrong Hall the previous week when we had an enjoyable time, first of all with the talk by Nell Gifford, of Giffords Circus, and then with the appetising hot and cold food served. There were various competitions and Mary Travell’s Bow Tie was awarded first prize.

The Speakers at our WI meeting were Mr and Mrs R Pritchard who spoke about Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), a group of hereditary disorders that affect a layer of the retina – the light sensitive lining at the back of the eye. The first symptoms of the disease are night blindness and bumping into things, often recognised as clumsiness in a child. In most cases this is followed by loss of peripheral vision and ultimately RP can lead to blindness. RP can arise at any age but most often is seen first in children and young adults. There is currently no treatment which will halt the progress of RP, or reverse its effects.

Giveacar are more than happy to collect old cars that are no longer need, and either sell them at auction or scrap them and give the proceeds to RP Fighting Blindness, 0207 736 4242.

The competition for a Spring flower was won by Valerie Niblett, with Jean Rendall 2nd and Isobel Clutterbuck 3rd.

The next meeting will take place on Monday, 10 April, at 7.30 pm when we will have a Whist Drive, organised by Mr Reg King, and the Competition will be for a decorated egg. New members are always welcome.

TYTHERINGTON WI 95th BIRTHDAY PARTY

WI

On Monday, September 9 2015, we celebrated our 95th Birthday by holding a party in Tytherington Village Hall. Members past and present were invited, resulting in 44 guests enjoying a very tasty three course meal.

Just 5 years younger than the NFWI and in tandem with some neighbouring WIs we are proud of the longevity of our group and very keen to see it celebrate its centenary. However, our current membership is at a low ebb and we would like to invite new members from the locality to join us. We meet at 7.30pm on the third Monday of the month at Tytherington Village Hall. Come as a guest and try us out, we promise there will be a welcome on the mat.
